Business Of Film & Television

 

On completion of the Foundation Course, students move into their Business of Film & Television specialisation. The Business of Film & Television programme is uniquely designed to ground students in the essential organisational skills and business practices of the film and television industry. Guided through the entire process of logistics, scheduling, casting and using script breakdowns, students learn how to plan and keep their productions within prescribed parameters. The Business of Film & Television course covers many topics, including:

 
  • art direction, production styles and formats
  • domestic/international units and filming requirements
  • scouting, securing locations, getting permits
  • legal issues, taxation law, foreign exchange law, censor certificates copyright and piracy
  • bank guarantees,insurance,  film financing,  budgeting
  • the music industry, artists and dancers unions,safety and occupational health
  • properties, sets, animals, wardrobe and makeup, equipment, transport, catering,lodging
  • requirements for special, visual and computer effects
  • film and television post-production, lab and mastering requirements
  • publicity, promotion, festivals and premiers, ratings and marketing
  • setting up businesses, joint ventures and co-productions
  • television technology, transmission and operations
 
Through actual productions with budgets and complete pre-production, casting and post-production, the programme absorbs students in the technical and creative demands of production for television, feature, documentary, advertising or music films. These film exercises and projects are tightly scheduled, placing you under the same strict time constraints you will encounter in the professional world, teaching you discipline and efficiency. When not occupied with your own film exercises, you will assist other crews, resulting in a constant rotation of cooperation and collaboration. Each student will produce multiple projects that may include:
 
  • Multi-camera Television Exercise
  • Mise-en-scene Exercises
  • Dialogue Exercises
  • Advertising films
  • Music videos
  • Documentary including full research
  • Diploma films
 
Students grasp organisational complexities using manual breakdowns and then progress to the latest production softwares like MovieMagic Scheduling & Budgeting for their projects. In addition to getting hands-on filmmaking experience in the they complete numerous script breakdown exercises, market research studies and project proposals for both feature film and television.

Kurt holds a BA from Georgetown University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and an MFA (film) from the University of New Orleans. He has taught or lectured at the University of La Verne, Texas Christian University, California State University, Northridge and Susquehanna University. He has twelve years of experience developing, writing, directing and producing movies and shows for major studios, cable companies and networks, in all formats, including High-Definition, digital video and 35 mm film. Kurt was President of Abandon Pictures for four years, which produced films such as Sundance Film Festival selection Scotland, P.A., starring Oscar winner Christopher Walken, Oxygen starring Oscar winner Adrian Brody as well as Off the Lip, Pros and Cons, Glory Days, Project Greenlight, Dimensions of Fear, Time Shifters and The Brink. As Vice President of Orly Adelson Prductions for three years, he developed and sold 21 television films. Additionally he has directed Brian Gina Nick and Welcome to the Neighborhood, and written and produced many other films.
