On completion of the Foundation Course, students move into their Direction specialisation. The Direction Programme aims to equip students with artistic and technical knowledge, while giving them the opportunity to develop their creative talent through a complete production experience. More so than other disciplines, Direction students are required to have a broad knowledge and mastery of many skills. An emphasis is placed on the cooperation and interaction of various disciplines and the director's ability to communicate his or her ideas, to balance the often differing demands of the writer, producer and actor. Through lectures, workshops, extensive practice and complete productions, students master:

  • Screenplay and visual storytelling strategies
  • The grammar of film and language of television
  • Aesthetics
  • Characterisation
  • Shot breakdown and storyboarding techniques
  • Production breakdown
  • Casting and directing actors
  • Cinematography
  • Editing styles
  • Artistic and technical use of sound and music
  • Business procedures of filmmaking.

Through actual productions with budgets and complete pre-production, casting and post-production, the programme absorbs students in the technical and creative demands of direction for television, feature, documentary, advertising or music films. These film exercises and projects are tightly scheduled, placing you under the same strict time constraints you will encounter in the professional world, teaching you discipline and efficiency. When not occupied with your own film exercises, you will assist other crews, resulting in a constant rotation of cooperation and collaboration. Each student will direct multiple projects that may include:

  • Multi-camera Television Exercise
  • Mise-en-scene Exercises
  • Dialogue Exercises
  • Advertising films
  • Music videos
  • Documentary including full research
  • Diploma films
