On completion of the Foundation Course, students move into their Editing specialisation, mastering the technical challenges of the editing process, from synching daily rushes to the final cut and sound mix, working through progressively more difficult non-linear editing systems. As they advance from Final Cut Pro HD to Avid HD, their competence grows from simple cuts, montage and dialogue sequences to the more complex dexterity required for suspense, action, comedic and dramatic styles. The emphasis shifts from the technical to the artistic, as students experiment to find the pace and structure to give their work coherency and impact.

Through actual productions with budgets and complete pre-production, casting and post-production, the programme absorbs students in the technical and creative demands of editing for television, feature, documentary, advertising or music films. These film exercises and projects are tightly scheduled, placing you under the same strict time constraints you will encounter in the professional world, teaching you discipline and efficiency. When not occupied with your own film exercises, you will assist other crews, resulting in a constant rotation of cooperation and collaboration. Through lectures, workshops, extensive practice and complete productions, students master:

  • editing for action, comedy and suspense scenes,
  • complex dialogue scenes,
  • montage,
  • narrative fiction,
  • docudrama,
  • news footage,
  • current affair stories,
  • travelogues
  • personality-based and social issue documentaries,
  • promos and interstitials.

Whistling Woods International will offer the Apple Pro Training Series, in Final Cut Pro, to its Editing students. These courses will be taught by Apple Certified Trainers and will balance concepts and lectures with hands-on labs and exercises. Upon completion of the course material, students can become an Apple Certified Pro by taking the certification exam.
