A. R. Rahman formally opened the recently completed technical facilities at a ribbon cutting ceremony. The facilties include film and television studios, recording studios and midi, digital audio and editing workstations. Also present were Rakyesh Mehra, Abbas and Mustan and Anil Kapoor. A delegation of leading Spanish producers, directors and actors travelled to the Whistling Woods campus to meet with management and tour the campus. Whistling Woods currently has a Spanish student and has provided assistance to Spanish documentary teams, helping to forge an growing association with the European country. Spain has a successful film industry, producing over films per year, many of which receive international distribution.

Guillermo Navaro, the 2007 Oscar winner for Cinematography, spent several days on the Whistling Woods campus shooting his latest short film, Blood Brothers. The film, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and executive produced by Mira Nair. Navarro and Bharadwaj took time out of their schedules to meet with students and faculty and visit the classrooms. |

March 2nd 2007 - Karan Johar Teaches
Karan Johar let an interactive session on the writing and production of his work, focussing on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, beginning by describing the life journey that brought him to his current position. For the first time ever, he discussed the huge influence of Indian mythology on his personal storytelling and detailed the visual motifs that layer his films. He spoke candidly on mistakes he had made in his productions and guided the students on how to avoid such pitfalls. Karan told the students, “We never had this opportunity for a structured film education, I cannot tell you how much I wish I could have been a student here.” |

 A delegation of leading Swedish film producers, including Directors of the Swedish Film Institute journeyed to Whistling Woods to meet with management and students and tour the facilities. February 16th 2007 Shabana Azmi and Vinay Shukla Teach
Following a screening of the film Godmother, writer and director Vinay Shukla and actor Shabana Azmi shared their experiences of the development and shoot of the movie, which won six national awards. Shabana Azmi provided guidance to the acting students on honing their skills while Vinay Shulka discussed the intricacies of forming a script utilising multiple regional languages.

February 9th 2007 Kunal Kohli – My Personal Journey.
The young director shared the journey that led him from video journalism to film direction and his experiences while directing Mujhse Disti Karoge, Hum Tum and Fanaa. He told the students, “It took me 6 years of struggle to get from being a nobody to entering the film industry and a further 3-4 years to prove myself as a competent director. I believe if I had studied at WWI, this journey would have been much faster – maybe in 2-3 years” |

February 2nd 2007 - Dev Anand Teaches
 Award-winning actor and filmmaker Dev Anand shared many experiences from his 61-year career that has led him through over 150 films, beginning when he left Lahore for Mumbai as a young man. Students quizzed him on his methodologies for breaking down a film script from both the actor’s and director’s point of view as well as his personal sources of inspiration. The vigour of the 82 year old was inspiring, “I am still a student. My past experience and my everyday experiences are my education, but every time I start a film, I am still nervous”

Nagesh Kukunoor led students in an analysis of the production of his latest film, Dor. He also provided advice on topics that included working with child actors, adapting screenplays and how to develop your unique voice as a director and storyteller.

January 15th 2007 – Leading screenwriter Syd Field
Syd Field, the highly influential US screenwriter visited WWI to lead an in-depth discussion with the entire student body on screenwriting and the Hollywood industry. Mr Field, who is credited with formalising the three act structure in scriptwriting, has also taught at USC, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA and the AFI. Of particular interest to students was how to balance the formality of the three act structure in ensemble filmmaking, such as Crash or Babel. He also gave advice for Indian talent looking to break into Hollywood. He told students, “ What an extraordinary experience to be in this school. A great step towards the future of Indian Cinema"

January 12th 2007– Rajkumar Hirani details Munnabhai creation
Rajkumar Hirani spent 4 hours guest lecturing at WWI for Direction, Editing, Screenwriting and Cinematography students. Discussing his 'Munnabhai' films in detail, he covered his personal experiences which led the development of script & screenplay and his techniques for dealing with different actors. Mr Murlidhar (Lage Raho Munnabhai cinematographer) also presented an extremely detailed technical analysis of the lighting, shooting and logistics for the film.

The final selection of students, chosen from a highly competitive admission procedure that began in August 2006, have begun their classes for the foundation course. They will complete an 8 day orientation covering all technology and software operation for the school, before diving straight into their first film project. October 28th 2006 – Jag Mundhra on Globalisation
Dr Jagmohan Mundhra, the writer, director and editor of over 30 films, delivered his first guest lecture on the topic of the globalisation of the Indian film industry. He explored the nature of crossover content, stating, “Content that can successfully cross-over out of its cinematic home is content that is so deeply genuine in representing its subject that the power of the story can transcend cultural barriers.”. He also discussed the differences between Indian and international film industries in terms of the relationships between content and capital.

 Top UK dance trio The Twilight Players spent three days on the Whistling Woods campus conducting a series of dance workshops for the students. September 22nd 2006 - Farrah Khan Teaches Song Picturisation
 Guest teacher Farah Khan conducted her first session on the topic “The Importance of Song Picturisation in Indian Cinema”. Farah has worked on over 60 feature films and recently choreographed for Shakira for the MTV Music Video Awards. She began by detailing the preproduction process that goes into song picturisations including script analysis, character development and storyboarding. The students viewed and analysed a number of songs to which Farrah provided guidance on production technique and working with a variety of actors.

September 15th 2006 - US Screenwriter Tom Abrams teaches
 Multi Award winning screenwriter Tom Abrams presented a guest lecture titled “Story is King” as part of his first ever trip to India. Abrams, who has taught throughout Europe and Asia, began by delving into the concepts of “Dramatic Circumstance”, “Developing Character Desire” and “The Call to Action”. He then presented a scene by scene analysis of the Dustin Hoffman classic, “The Graduate”, exploring the themes and concepts and their development by the writer and director.

September 7th 2006 - Shyam Benegal conducts his first lecture
 Highly respected filmmaker Shyam Benegal today conducted his first class for the Direction subject. He began with personal introductions with each student and enquired after their previous experiences and career plans before beginning his lecture, “Subtext and Social Responsibility”.

September 5th 2006 - Poets gather for Mushaira at Whistling Woods
 Following an introduction by writer Javed Siddiqui, leading Urdu poets Iqbal Ansari, Mukesh Darpan, Shabib Hasan, Zakhmi Muzafari, Musuma Tabbasum and Nazir Fatahpuri performed an enthralling selection of work for the student body. The students were taught the correct etiquette to demonstrate appreciation for the poetry and, encouraged by the cheering of the student body in their newly discovered Urdu phrases, the mushaira continued late into the evening.

August 31st 2006 - Whistling Woods honours Hrishida
 Over a 3 day film and lecture programme, students paid tribute to Hrishikesh Mukerjee and the huge contribution he has made in the pages of Indian cinema. Nagesh Kukunoor and editor Subhash Gupta both spoke at length on their experiences with the master filmmaker, discussing his style and school of thought. Nagesh passed on pieces of Hrishida's advice on coaching actors to achieve realistic performances. Subhash described his editing skills and techniques and inspirational “nothing is impossible” attitude.

August 28th 2006 - Professor Richard Pells, “Hollywood and Bollywood”
 Richard Pells, Professor of History at the University of Texas conducted a guest lecture on the topic, “Hollywood and Bollywood: The Global Influence of American and Indian Films.” Professor Pells led a discourse on the contrasts and similarities between the American and Indian film industries, the impact of American popular culture on the world as well as the continuing influence of foreign cultures on the US.

 Students of the 1st batch of Whistling Woods offered a surprise performance to the core team, staff & faculty of Whistling Woods to celebrate the completion of their first month of studies. Commencing with a traditional lamp-lighting, the next emotionally charged hour featured dance, song, mimicry, poetry and stunts.

August 17th 2006 - Ashok Amritraj's first guest faculty session
 Arriving in Mumbai specifically for this occasion, Mr Amritraj, one of Hollywood’s largest independent producers, interacted for over an hour with students and faculty in the Pelicula Auditorium on the WWI campus. Subjects discussed included the difference between the Indian and American film industries and Mr Amritraj's own production methodologies and techniques.

August 14th 2006 - Prolific singer Sukhwinder Singh appears as guest teacher
 Multi-award winning singer Sukhwinder Singh appeared as a surprise guest teacher for the Music Appreciation class conducted by D Wood, Sukhwinder discussed and demonstrated for over an hour on how a singer should alter his voice and personality while performing ‘playback singing’ as opposed to singing for oneself.

August 12th 2006 - Ashutosh Gowarikar's first Guest Faculty session
 After a special screening of ‘Swades”, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar conducted his first interaction with students at Whistling Woods International. Topics included his methodologies in constructing film scripts & screenplays, techniques for managing different actors, on-set team-management and sound design for films. He stressed the importance of personal convictions and social messages in filmmaking.

August 2nd 2006 - Vishal Bharadwaj teaches
 Following a viewing of his recently-released film ‘Omkara’, Vishal Bharadwaj spent an hour with students sharing his methodology for adapting Shakespeare to films and how he managed to successfully play the roles of screenwriter, dialogue-writer, music director, director and singer in his film. He also touched on the usage of film to depict regional life in India.

July 21st 2006 - Whistling Woods International – Inaugural Event
 Whistling Woods launched today in a grand Filmcity celebration. The Inaugural event was led by Chief Guest Dilip Kumar and Guests of Honor I&B Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi and Civil Aviation Minister Shri Praful Patel. A host of other dignitaries were present to congratulate and convey their best wishes to the Whistling Woods management and the first batch of students.
