- August 17th 2006

Arriving in Mumbai specifically for this interaction, Mr Amritraj, one of Hollywood’s largest independent producers, who also is on WWI’s International Advisory Board, interacted for over an hour with Mr Subhash Ghai – Chairman, Kurt Inderbitzin – Dean, the faculty and over 90 students of the first batch of WWI at the Pelicula Auditorium on the WWI campus.

The questions posed included:
“What attracted you to Hollywood as opposed to the Indian Film Industry”

“The Indian Film Industry is generally formulaic in its content creation as opposed to Hollywood, which has scope for all types and kinds of films. That is what I find really interesting”

Other topics discussed were the method Mr Amritraj employs in choosing the films he decides to produce, the level of macro/micro management that he goes through with his team for each and every film that they produce, his methodology of budgeting for films that end up being small budget films which do very well critically and make a lot more money at the box office, and many many more…

Mr Amritraj also stressed on the fact that all persons involved in the industry in any capacity (Editor, DOP, Sound Engineer, Actor, Director, etc) should have a basic foundation or grounding in ALL aspects of film-making, irrespective of their chosen profession. This helps them work easier as a team and understand the problem of other technicians and try to alleviate them.

He rounded up his visit with a message to the students – “You have been given a superb opportunity - Create with Passion and have a wonderful time doing it…”
