Anurag Kashyap conducts master-class with Whistling Woods students

Febuary 27 , 2008

Students of Whistling Woods International enjoyed a very interactive Q&A session with renowned Writer/Director, Anurag Kashyap on Friday, 15th February 2007.

Anurag shared his thoughts and beliefs in writing and directing some of the most interesting and realistic films of our time and the challenges he faced when his films were in the midst of controversy.

“Never stop learning and living for what you believe in” is definitely his motto as Anurag took the students through his journey from a script writer to a director. He shared many instances from his initial days of struggle in the industry and how his passion for cinema and scriptwriting got him through one of the toughest phases in his life. His directorial debut project ‘Paanch’ was banned from screening on the day of its premiere and has still not seen a release followed by his second film as a director, “Black Friday’ for its communal theme was caught yet again in controversy and saw a release only after 3 long years. But Anurag refused to give up and worked on many film projects as a ghost writer and at the same time wrote his own scripts on topics that he wanted to raise awareness on: social and anti social.

From a director’s perspective, Anurag believes in letting the actors audition for the role to bring out the character in the script by giving minimal input besides the script and not putting them in front of the camera.  Many scenes in “Black Friday” were shot without the actors’ knowledge on where the cameras were placed. “It’s easy to shoot a controversial film if you use your imagination” – With a lot of planning and research most of the realistic shots in Black Friday were filmed practically on the move and with minimum resources and budgets.
