After the Foundation Course, the specialised training in the craft of screenwriting will begin. This will be done through a dynamic schedule of lectures, seminars, script analyses, screenings, workshops, discussions, and both group and individual critiques. Students' talents are nurtured and honed to produce mature writers, skilled in the essential principles of storytelling: |
| |
- plot
- structure
- character development
- dialogue
|
| |
All these activities will be geared towards developing writing talent to give students the freedom to write the scripts that they want. The curriculum takes students through all the stages of scriptwriting - from the initial germ of an idea to the construction of a story to creating interesting characters and dialogue to finally crafting your story into an engaging script - under the guidance of professional screenwriters from every genre of film, television and theatre.
While the use of honest and powerful dialogue is valued, students are encouraged not merely to rely on words to tell their narratives, but to write visually, allowing for the impact of image and musical score. Student writing will form the basis of many actual film productions within the Institute, including ad films, dialogue exercises, documentaries and short films. This not only familiarises students with the collaboration skills involved with working alongside a director and producer, but also provides Screenwriting students with a showreel of complete productions to demonstrate the viability of their writing skills.
The training will include an understanding of the workings of the film industry - Indian as well as international. Students also learn the all-important business skills necessary to manage their careers, encompassing issues from pitching ideas and marketing their work to contracts and intellectual property rights. The course culminates with the thesis project, a complete feature film script ready for the students to take out into the industry to begin their careers
