Message from Meghna Ghai Puri, President, WWI

"The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are humanity's most ambitious plan for a better world. WWI is proud to have pledged to take action in order to meet and support these goals for a sustainable future and to reduce the institute's carbon footprint. Whether it's through student-led environmental drives and social cells on campus, student films and academic projects embedded in our curriculum that benefit a social cause or collaborating with eco-friendly and sustainable brands for corporate gifting, we're committed to making a difference. As educators, we have a great opportunity to create a very socially conscious institute and graduates who learn about these goals and develop insights into critical issues around the world, such as lack of access to clean water, poverty, hunger, and gender equality. This helps them to understand the unique challenges that communities all over the world face that they may not have been aware of previously. This knowledge fosters a sense of global connection and empathy for the entire planet. Together, with teachers and students, we can be a powerful force in achieving the United Nations' vision of a more peaceful, healthy, and equitable world by taking small and meaningful steps every day."

INITIATIVES

SUSTAINABLE CORPORATE GIFTING

At Whistling Woods, we are committed to making a positive impact on the environment, and one of the ways we achieve this is through our adoption of eco-friendly practices in our corporate gifting. We understand the importance of sustainable choices and are continuously striving to minimize our carbon footprint. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are actively transitioning to eco-friendly packaging and gift options.

MYOHO CORNER

We are proud to introduce the Myoho Corner on our campus. This unique area has been created with the help of our students to emphasize the importance of sustainable practices within our community.

The corner is furnished with recycled furniture, crafted from used and discarded materials including car tires, plastic bottles, etc. We also have a bench made of 100% recycled multi-layered plastic (MLP), which we have sourced from Econscious Company that embodies our commitment to environmental responsibility.

The name ‘Myoho’ was chosen to highlight the wonderful feeling that results from repurposing leftover materials into something fresh and useful. The purpose of Myoho Corner is to encourage the WWI community including students and staff, to be more environmentally conscious and we hope it will inspire them to adopt sustainable habits both on and off campus.

KHWAAB

KHWAAB is a student social cell of Whistling Woods that was specifically created to empower and engage students in CSR activities. It has been able to bring together students from all the schools, faculty, and staff of the campus to aid in its mission. By creating an environment of collaboration and cohesion through meaningful projects, the initiative hopes to provide an opportunity for students across all schools to come together and give back to their communities.

With this initiative, Whistling Woods hopes to create an environment where everyone can come together and make a positive difference in the world.

EMBRACE

Embrace is a student led initiative that strives to create a safe space for expressing yourself. We want to engage with students, staff, and faculty to create an environment where we can feel more comfortable being ourselves, and better cope with the stressors in our lives. We want to work towards creating more acceptance specifically regarding areas of gender and sexuality & create a more inclusive environment for all. Embrace is working towards building this safe space, advocating for more acceptance, and creating more awareness about the same.

EMBRACE WALL

A recent "Embrace Wall" was constructed on the WWI campus with the assistance of student volunteers from Team Khwaab and Embrace. The strength of compassion and kindness towards oneself and others is symbolised by the Embrace Wall. It is an effort to inspire everyone to be able to accept themselves and those around them. Along with art that illustrates these words, the crossword puzzle on the wall includes words that were chosen to fit the theme of the wall. Embrace Wall has a bowl in addition to the paper chits made from recycled materials.

The embrace wall serves as a blank canvas for artistic expression and embodies the collaborative and harmonious nature of our faculty, staff, and students. Beautiful paintings that our creative team of students and staff proudly hung on the walls are intended to motivate and inspire everyone who passes by them.

Our campus community's wide range of interests and viewpoints are reflected in the wall art. Each piece reflects the artist's distinct sense of fashion, worldview, moral principles, and sense of self. To create a culture of acceptance and respect, it is crucial, in our opinion, to embrace these differences. We want to foster a sense of community among all our campus community's members through the artwork on our walls.

PET BOTTLE CRUSHING MACHINE

We are proud to announce that we have installed a PET Bottle crushing machine in our campus to help towards the Sustainable Development Goals in our own small way. This device is a cutting-edge strategy for fostering sustainability and minimising plastic waste. We firmly believe that each of us can contribute to the planet's well-being by leading a sustainable lifestyle and making modest efforts to preserve the environment. By collecting, sorting, and processing used beverage bottles that would otherwise end up in landfills or the ocean, the PET bottle crushing machine enables us to reduce waste. By doing this, we are able to turn waste into useful resources while also reducing waste. With this initiative, we hope to encourage others to adopt sustainable lifestyles and make a difference.

CHANGING THE WORLD ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME

WWI has joined the Bottles for Change Run, a movement spearheaded by Bisleri that aims to promote sustainable plastic consumption and encourage its recycling. The pet bottle-crushing machine installed on our campus helps us drive this same belief. Recently, the college gave 28kgs of plastic to the Bisleri team to contribute to the success of the movement. We hope the movement grows in its success as we all try to move to a more sustainable future.

Changing the world one bottle at a time

BIODEGRADABLE SANITARY NAPKIN DISPENSER

A crucial step towards sustainable development is encouraging sustainable production and consumption practises on campus. We have set up, on campus, the majority of the girl's restrooms have a biodegradable sanitary napkin dispenser. This will not only make it more convenient for female students but also guarantee that the waste produced by these napkins won't have a negative impact on the environment. Dispensers for biodegradable feminine products will lessen the amount of disposable plastic waste produced and contribute to the development of a campus environment that is more sustainable. For any reason, including emergencies, students can purchase sanitary napkins from the dispenser. The money raised will be used to care for our on-campus furry friends.

GENDER-NEUTRAL AND ACCESSIBLE WASHROOMS

At Whistling Woods, we strive to foster an environment where everyone feels free to express themselves as who they truly are without concern for criticism or the feeling that they can't. As a result, we are happy to announce that we now have a gender-neutral restroom and a restroom for people with special needs, thanks to the student-led initiatives "Khwaab" and "Embrace."

A restroom that is gender-neutral for anyone and everyone, regardless of their gender identity, and accessible restrooms for everyone with special needs.

Regardless of gender identity or status as a person with a disability, these facilities offer a secure, welcoming, and respectful environment. Additionally, they present a chance to promote more equitable educational opportunities.

STREET PLAY BY THE STUDENTS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Our student actors of the Actors' Studio have put on a powerful play to raise awareness of climate change. Through their performance, they have successfully conveyed the severity of the situation and highlighted the urgent need for action. In addition, they have also highlighted how small changes can make a big difference when it comes to saving our planet from further destruction. Through their passionate characters and powerful message, our students have certainly made an impression on our audience and helped spread the message about climate change.

WORKSHOP ON GENDER SENSITIZATION

We held a gender sensitization workshop for all our organization's staff and faculty on July 29, 2022. The workshop's objectives were to raise participants' awareness of gender sensitization and provide them with the knowledge and tools they need to deal tactfully with gender-related issues. We also talked about how to spot unintentional bias in our day-to-day work lives and how to eliminate it. The workshop was a huge success because it raised the level of comprehension of these issues among the participants.

CALM CORNERS ON CAMPUS

The good health and wellbeing of students, staff, and faculty is one of the sustainable development objectives that we actively support on the WWI campus. The Calm Corner was established for this reason. A calm, tranquil spot where faculty, staff, and students can stop, unwind, and breathe after a long day. We understand that daily craziness can frequently have a negative impact on our wellbeing. As a result, we created a space called the calm corner where we invite both faculty and students to find a place of peace and quiet to unwind and unwind during the day. Along with yoga mats, meditation books, a reading nook, art supplies, and journaling tools, the space also includes a massage chair. There is truly something here for everyone! Creating this space is a collective effort by our people.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

On the World Environment Day, a beautiful little kitchen garden was planted in collaboration with Movement India Teams at Children's Aid Society, Umerkhadi, Mumbai. The Home houses both children in need of care and protection and children in conflict with the law under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2000. A total of 25 saplings (ranging from curry leaves to lemon grass, chilli to lime and even roses) were planted across the premises. with help from the Whistling Woods & Movement India Teams as well as the Shelter Home staff.

RECYCLED COPIER PAPER

One printout at a time, we're helping the environment by switching to recycled copier paper on campus. We all care about the environment and want to lower our carbon footprints as good citizens. We can make a positive change and ensure that we are not contributing to global warming by switching to recycled copier paper. We feel good about taking that printout without feeling bad about it because it not only lowers costs but also our expenses. Everyone benefits from the situation, which is a win-win!

COMPOSTABLE TEES

The School of Fashion on our campus is committed to advancing eco-friendly fashion and minimising our environmental impact. Our School of Fashion student created fully compostable and biodegradable tees as part of the final semester fashion collection submission. These tees can be responsibly disposed of without harming the environment because they are made from 100% biodegradable and compostable eco-friendly fabrics. This programme emphasises the value of environmentally friendly clothing and demonstrates how innovative solutions can help us lessen our impact on the environment.

MINIATURE SET DESIGN WORKSHOP

Every year, our production design students travel to one of the cities in the country, then return to create a detailed miniature set depicting their observations of the houses, infrastructure, and location of the visit. We stopped using Thermocol for such projects a few years ago and now use materials like wood, plywood, reusable fiberglass, stones, and soil, the majority of which is re-used from previous years' projects.

NGO SCHOLARSHIPS

Every year, Whistling Woods awards scholarships to NGO Kids in order to bridge gaps and provide equal access to quality education for all.

SHORT FILMS ON SDG'S

Stories that inspire, inform, and engage viewers all over the world can be brought to life through the medium of film.
