Advanced Diploma in Filmmaking with Specialisations | (2 Years)

Programme Overview

Awarded by: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences – Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956

The objective of this 2-year, 4-semester programme is to create complete filmmaking professionals. Over the programme of their study, students will have classes in theory of filmmaking and its various specialisations, along with hands-on practical instruction. This learning leads to multiple projects during the programme – some individual and many in groups. Students are also introduced to works of master filmmakers through screenings and analysis. Frequent Masterclasses & general education classes by practicing filmmakers round out their learning

The first semester of the programme is the foundation semester. In this semester-long foundation programme, all students are exposed to the many disciplines of filmmaking – Screenwriting, Producing, Direction, Acting, Cinematography, Editing and Sound Design. Students receive instruction through a powerful integration of student productions, classroom theoretical instruction, motion picture screenings and analysis, workshops and interactions with global filmmakers. Along with core filmmaking programmes, students also take classes in Contextual Studies (General Education). These subjects will help students understand their core subjects better and create complete filmmakers.

The film foundation semester develops within students, their own unique story development, filmmaking perspectives and vision. The programme also promotes individual professional conduct, communication skills and leadership qualities.

For the rest of the four semesters, along with Contextual Studies (GE), students choose electives to specialise in one of the following areas:

Teaching Methods

Theory lectures: These lectures will be interactive and students will be encouraged to participate actively. For certain specialized topics, leading professionals and industry guest lecturers will be invited.

Practical classes: Filmmakers learn by doing. So hands-on practical learning supports all theory and forms the bulk of the training.

Interaction with professionals: Through the ‘5th Veda’ and ‘Film Forum’ events WWI regularly invites practicing filmmakers to interact with students… not only to share their professional and creative experiences with them, but to actually make the students work.

Film viewing and script-analyses: Students will regularly analyse and deconstruct screenplays of existing important films, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the actor’s process.

Projects: Every term students will participate in co-ordinated film projects with students from other departments. It is through these projects that they will learn how to make their own choices in the process of making a film.
