Depictions of Colonialism and Power in Media
A session with award-winning filmmaker Manfred Becker marked the launch of VIIEW. Becker used films and photographs to explore how history is documented and how colonial legacies continue to shape modern identity. He covered how Western audiences “consume” sites of tragedy and conflict, raising unsettling questions about voyeurism and the “Imperial Gaze” in global media. Through case studies and examples, he explored concepts of stereotyping and cultural appropriation, particularly with reference to depicting diverse cultures through media.
