PROGRAMME SPECIFICATIONS

Duration: 3 Years (6 Semesters)
Awarded By: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

The objective of this 3-year, 6-semester course is to give students an in-depth understanding of the Management of Media and the Entertainment industry.  Over the course of their study, the students will be exposed to Management topics; Contextual studies (General Education) as well as practical and theoretical topics of media and entertainment to gain a holistic perspective of the media world. A whole array of subjects is taught to the students to create a strong base of understanding and knowledge.

Overview of the Indian Media & Entertainment Industry

The Indian Media and Entertainment Industry includes Print, Television, Film, Radio, Digital Media, Music, Gaming, Events and Live Media, Out of Home and other ancillary media.

The industry is valued at over USD 15 Billion.  Although this is only 0.84% of the Global M&E industry, the Indian M&E industry is a sunrise industry with a growth of 11.8%, which is more than double the rate of growth of the Global industry.  In fact, over the next five years, the industry is projected to grow at 14.2%.  This growth has been led by the industry being able to extract more revenue from its already large volume.

In the M&E industry, building volume is hard.  India already has the volume.  The Indian M&E industry now needs to build value in each unit of the already existing volume by enhancing quality.

The downside:

  • The media industry as a whole still lacks sufficient world-class training facilities to enable professionalism and best practices across all levels of the industry.
  • Of the 3.5 million people employed by the M&E industry, over 50% involved in content creation have no formal training. (75% in case of Film & TV)
  • Very few world-class Film / TV training Institutes in India with a combined output of approximately 500 graduates a year, with 200 of them being from a single institute.

The other main issue facing the industry is piracy – which affects every sector of the industry and causes almost 35% revenue reduction.

Course Structure:

The 3-year BBA course endeavours to create professionals for the burgeoning Indian Media & Entertainment industry.  In these 6 semesters, undergraduate level courses walk students through all areas of media – Print, Television, Film, Radio, Digital Media, Music, Gaming, Events and Live Media, Out of Home and other ancillary media.  Students learn through lectures, practical hands-on work, and through exposure to real world situations through live projects.  Additionally, media professionals visit the Institute on a regular basis to instil in students those skills that they will need to negotiate life after college.  This is a comprehensive programme geared towards creating Media professionals for the Indian Media and Entertainment industry.

WWI also has student discounted pricing, details of which will be made available to the student.
    • All students being accepted into the Producing specialisation of Filmmaking need to acquire Movie Magic Budgeting & Movie Magic Scheduling softwares, which will be made available to them at a special cost allocated for WWI students.
    • All students of the Music Production & Composition programs will need to acquire a MacBook Pro laptop with specifications: MacBook Pro M2 Processor, 32GB RAM (higher is better), a good quality headphone, a MIDI controller keyboard, a license of ProTools software, Sibelius software and a license of the Apple Logic Pro X sequencing software. Changes to the same, if any, will be intimated at the time of admission.
    • All students will need to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud software via annual subscription. Mandatory to all. They will be allotted 1 Adobe CC subscription license which they can use both on & off campus on a maximum of 2 devices. The same is being made available to them at a heavily discounted rate of Rs 12,000/- p.a. (subject to an annual increase). This will reflect in the Sem 1/3/5/7 invoice, as applicable. Further, all students would need to acquire good quality headphones. We do not recommend sharing of headphones between students.
    • Students other than for the above-mentioned programs need not acquire their own laptops and can use the computing assets available on campus, but it is recommended that they acquire one after their 1st year, preferably a Macbook to use and get comfortable with off-campus as well. WWI is happy to assist students in selection of their laptops so that it serves them even after program completion.
  • Health Insurance is mandatory for all students. Whistling Woods International provides a group health insurance policy, the cost of which is already built into the fees. There is no additional payment needed for the same. However, it is incumbent on students and parents to provide accurate health information, especially historical health insurance, else the insurance company may reject claims based on ‘undeclared existing condition’ rules, at which point, the cost of the medical treatment will have to be borne by the student / parent.
  • Norms under the New Education Policy allow a student to take a 3-yr break during the official tenure of a degree program to complete their program. This includes term repeat on account of failure or attendance norms. So, a 3-yr UG degree program needs to be completed within 6 years & a 4-yr UG degree program within 7 years. Fees will be payable as applicable for each repeat semester that the student attends based on the current fees prevailing for that semester for the batch that the student joins into. If multiple breaks cause the students to cross the 5/6/7 year threshold, they will need to re-register as a new student. The same is also applicable in case of credit transfers from other universities.
  • Whistling Woods is facing litigation with respect to its campus in Filmcity, Mumbai. WWI has secured relief through interim orders passed by both the Hon. Supreme Court of India on September 22, 2014 and the Hon. Bombay High Court on July 30, 2014, on WWI’s Review Petition challenging the Hon. Bombay High Court’s February 2012 decision on the matter. In its order of July 30, 2014, the Hon. Bombay High Court has allowed WWI to continue its educational activities unhindered until the Review Petition is finally disposed off and in its order of September 22, 2014, the Hon. Supreme Court of India has reaffirmed that decision. The Maharashtra State government, through its Cabinet has taken a decision, in late 2018, to allot the land on which the campus is situated to WWI on a long-term lease subject to High Court clearance. The Cabinet Note for the same is available in the Maharashtra government public documents section. The lease agreement finalisation currently underway and will be presented before the High Court soon. In case there is any update on this matter, adequate intimation / notice will be given.
  • Fee Policies as above are subject to change at Management’s discretion. Appropriate notification of the same will be given to all students. Excessively delayed fee payments may be cause for cancellation of enrolment of student.
